Tsinghua faculty gives talk on interdisciplinary research

Cheung Kong Scholar Chair Professor of Tsinghua University, Beijing, Prof Yingqing Xu, visited HKUST and gave a talk entitled “Interdisciplinary Research”. In this talk, he introduced the interdisciplinary education and research of the X studio at Academy of Arts & Design in Tsinghua University. There are about 28 graduate students and a group of interns in the studio, with very diverse academic backgrounds such as the product design, visual design, management, animation, philosophy, architecture, physics, computer science, software engineering, automation, electronic engineering, mechanics, multimedia, new media art, and so on. Their research focus on the immersive perception & interaction, natural user interface design, tangible perception & interaction, and e-heritage. He also introduced part of their research work, from new media art to tangible interaction.

Prof Xu is also the director of the X Studio, the head of the Department of Information Art & Design of Tsinghua University, the director of the Lab for Lifelong Learning at Tsinghua University (TULLL), and deputy dean of Institute for Accessibility Development Tsinghua University. He joined Tsinghua University in November 2011, and his current teaching and researching focus on the user experience design, natural user interface design, immersive perception & interaction, tangible perception & interaction, and e-heritage. Before joined Tsinghua University, he was a Lead Researcher of Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA, Beijing China) where he had worked for 12 years since January 1999. Dr. Xu has published over 100 research papers and granted US patents, as well as a bundle of Chinese patents. He received his Sc.B from the Department of Mathematics of Jilin University (China) in 1982, and his Ph.D from the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1997. He is a distinguished member of CCF (China Computer Federation), a senior member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), a member of CAA (China Artists Association) and CDIA (China Industrial Design Association).
